If you haven’t been to the Pike Place Market in a while, you might be surprised by how different it feels now. One of the biggest reasons is the Overlook Walk—a sweeping, elevated path that opens the Market to the waterfront, Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains beyond. The addition of the Overlook Walk has softened the experience of the Market (as we locals call it), making it less about rushing through and more about lingering, wandering and discovering something new along the way. Here are some of our favorite sights, meals, treats and specialty shops to help you explore.
MARKET HIGHLIGHTS
Overlook Walk
Opened in late 2024, the Overlook Walk is a spectacularly scenic connection between Pike Place Market and the waterfront. A series of plazas, steps and benches invite you to linger and take in the panoramic view of ferries crossing the bay, mountains in the distance and waterfront activities unfolding below.
Northwest Microcosm
Tucked into an alcove that’s easy to miss at the top of the Overlook Walk, a colorful mosaic by artist Clare Dohna Market showcases fruits and vegetables sold at the Market, regional wildflowers and wildlife, and local aquatic life. She spent more than three years hand-painting nearly 4,000 tiles for this whimsical three-part installation.
Gum Wall
In an alley hidden beneath the Market, the Gum Wall is a magnet for kids. It’s vibrant, on the gross side, and definitely memorable. Love it or hate it, it’s worth a quick look if only to say you’ve seen it.
Rachel the Pig
Rachel, the Market’s beloved bronze piggy bank, sits near the main entrance. Donations support the Pike Place Market Foundation, which funds vital services for the community. This is a great spot to soak in the sounds of buskers and the buzz of the Market.
Flying Fish
The energy at Pike Place Fish is infectious, with vendors calling out orders and joking with the crowd. Fish-tossing only happens occasionally, but the sheer variety of seafood on display is impressive in its own right.
SWEET STOPS
Freya Bakery
This hidden-away Scandinavian-inspired bakery fashions artisan pastries that are truly wonderful. You can expect flaky blueberry Danishes, crunchy kouign-amanns and innovative pastries such as a pear crème brûlée tart and a cinnamon-dusted churro cruffin. Freya also offers a nice selection of sandwiches.
Gelatiamo
Tucked in on the Pike Place Market Hillclimb, long-time tenant Gelatiamo makes exceptional traditional Italian gelato that appears on the menus of some of Seattle’s best restaurants. Flavors change seasonally, but their Florence-style rice gelato, reminiscent of rice pudding, is a standout.
Hellenika
This is no ordinary yogurt counter. Cultured gelato made from a lightly sweet Greek yogurt base is prepared fresh daily at Hellenika in flavors including Marionberry and honey lavender. After waiting in the usual line, inside you’ll see a colorful array of tubs of gelato churning away. Be sure to sample the unique ube-coconut.
Le Panier
A Pike Place staple for decades, Le Panier often draws a line out the door. It’s worth the wait for caramelized-sugar palmiers and buttery pain aux raisins, both reliably crave-worthy.
CASUAL LUNCH SPOTS
Maíz
Single-origin heirloom corn from small Mexican farms, ground and formed into tortillas onsite, is at the heart of this bright, modern taqueria. The tacos, tamales and street-food–style dishes at Maiz have earned well-deserved attention for their flavor and craftsmanship.
Michou Deli
Mediterranean-inspired sandwiches and salads made with quality ingredients make Michou an easy lunch choice. Grab something to go then snag a picnic table overlooking the Sound for one of the best casual meals in the Market.
Pasta Casalinga
Brian has been a regular for years at this tiny tucked-away counter serving handmade pasta dishes that rotate constantly. On a recent visit, we enjoyed the white lasagna and a seafood pasta in a spicy tomato base. Pasta Casalinga is a perfect stop for a warm, comforting meal.
CLASSIC MARKET DINNERS
Le Pichet
Just around the corner on First Avenue, the long-time favorite Le Pichet is rumored to serve the best steak frites in the city, and I concur. Expect classic French fare in a cozy, convivial setting. Don’t miss the classically prepared chocolate mousse, beautifully plated with a quenelle of whipped cream.
The Pink Door
Reservations at the legendary Pink Door book up months in advance (though you can try your chance as walk-ins). Equal parts Italian restaurant and cabaret, it features nightly entertainment ranging from jazz to aerial performances. With house-made pasta, chandeliers and candlelight, The Pink Door is made for a memorable evening.
Place Pigalle
With its black-and-white tiled floor and dark wood cabinets, Place Pigalle feels like a French bistro—until you notice the view of the Seattle Wheel and ferries gliding by. The food is classic, the ambiance quietly lovely.
SPECIALTY FOOD SHOPS
DeLaurenti Food & Wine
A hub for food lovers, DeLaurenti offers imported cheeses, cured meats, wines and a delicious array of culinary gems of all sorts. Whether you’re cooking during your stay or just browsing, it’s fun to explore.
World Spice
Every visit to this spice merchant (on Western Avenue) ends with something unexpected coming home with us. Literally. World Spice tucks a sample of a spice blend into every purchase, which is how we’ve found some truly fantastic spice medleys among the 300 fragrant herbs and spices on their shelves.
Paris-Madrid Grocery
Paris-Madrid Grocery is a treasure trove for lovers of Iberian flavors and perfect for provisions or a delicious souvenir. You’ll find tinned seafood, olive oils, stand-out aged sherries and gourmet treats, plus a thoughtfully curated wine selection.
